Guth's Manasses Bridge

Guth’s Manasses Bridge

Built in 1858, this 129-foot single span, of a Burr truss design with lengthwise planking, crosses the Jordan Creek in South Whitehall Township. It is one of two bridges in the township’s Covered Bridge Park and one of five built to cross the Jordan. Owned by Lehigh County it is still in use, and has a weight limit of 4 tons and a height limit of 9 feet-6 inches. The original span was partially destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1882. Before its construction travelers and area farmers forded the Jordan at this point. The builder is unknown but the bridge was named after Manasses Guth who lived in an adjacent stone farmhouse. He was a descendant of Lorentz Guth, the first settler in the area in 1745. It rests on stone and mortar abutments with long wing walls capped with concrete.
