Kreidersville Bridge
Kreidersville Bridge is the only remaining covered bridge in Northampton County. A Burr arch design bridge, it was built in 1839, making it the oldest covered bridge in the Lehigh Valley and one of the oldest in the nation. Construction of the first covered bridge in the nation, the 550-foot three span Schuylkill Permanent Bridge, was begun in October 1800. The 100-foot Kreidersville Bridge, now closed to traffic, crosses Hokendauqua Creek. It has a dark interior, with no window openings or openings under the eaves to admit light. At various times it has been known as Hummel’s, Koch’s and Solt’s Mill Bridge. Citizens rallied in 1959 to save it from demolition. It was taken over by the county, restored by the Commonwealth, and now is owned by Allen Township.
