Bogert's Bridge

Although not built until 1841, this bridge’s roots go back to the mid-1700s when the Bogert family moved into a log cabin next to the bridge’s future site. The original, of the Burr truss design, was built entirely of wood without a single nail or iron bond. Now owned by the city of Allentown, the 145-foot structure in the Lehigh Parkway spans the Little Lehigh Creek. The crosswise planking helped it withstand repeated flooding and disrepair from traffic and age. In 1956 a truck structurally damaged the bridge, but local residents saved it from destruction and the city closed it to vehicular traffic.
